Storage
for Cashmere Sweaters
Cashmere can be worn in any season, although
in some areas it would be too hot to wear any
type of sweater. But if cashmere can be
comfortably worn during the summer months in
your area, you may not need to store it away.
However, for those who do need to store their
sweaters, there are some precautions you should
take in order to store your cashmere sweaters
correctly. First of all, make sure the garment
is thoroughly clean because moths are attracted
to stained or soiled garments; they are actually
not attracted to the garment itself. Therefore,
you should hand wash or dry clean any of your
garments before storing them for the summer.
It is best to use a garment bag in which to
store your cashmere items. However, do not use
an airtight bag for storing any of your natural
sweaters (cashmere, wool, etc.) because the
garments need to be able to "breathe." A plastic
bag may be used so long as the bag is not
airtight. Many experts in this field believe the
natural fiber garments should be stored in a
canvas or muslin bag, with the garments wrapped
in tissue paper.
You may use more natural methods, instead of
mothballs, to repel months such as cloves,
lavender, rosemary, thyme, dried orange peel or
cedar. After all, the object is to repel months,
not "poison" yourself by breathing in those
"toxic" mothballs. Any items used to repel
months, whether natural or unnatural (mothballs)
should be wrapped in a sachet or tied in a
handkerchief to avoid staining your clothes. You
may also use wood chips to absorb excess
moisture and thus prevent mold from growing in
your storage area.
