You may be able to achieve
success with dying your sweater if you begin
with a very white cashmere that hails from
China. By using this type of garment, less dye will
be necessary to achieve the preferred color
making the process slightly easier.
A sweater made with the longer fibers will be
stronger and will also pill less than a sweater
with short fibers. The pilling is caused by the
abrasion of the short fibers that form small
balls on the surface of the garment. Most new
sweaters will naturally experience pilling, but
if the garment is good quality, the pilling
should not continue after the first cleaning.
However, with shorter fibers, which are less
expensive
to use, the pilling may continue.
Two-ply yarns are much better than single ply
due to the ply twist of the two-ply yarn. This
particular feature helps to offset the type of
torque that is evident in the single yarns. It
is common for sweater designers to use extra
plies for added weight and color, however the
extra plies do not add to the quality of the
product. Most cashmere sweaters are knitted with
two-ply yarn.
