How to Take Your Body
Measurements
When it comes to clothing, size
virtually means nothing. One manufacturer may
declare their garments to be a size 8, while
another manufacturer declares a size 12, for a
garment with the exact same fit.
The sizes in the United Kingdom look much the
same as those in the United States, however they
are not. US sizing has changed a great deal over
the past several years. This becomes a challenge
when looking for clothes in a vintage clothing
shop.
In order to convert women's European sizes to
women's US sizes, add 30 to your size. For
example, a US size 6 is a European size 36. But
for the best fit, refer to size charts, if
available. For UK sizes, a US size 8 is
approximately a UK 10.
What you need to do to determine your size is to
take your measurements. Then you will be able to
decipher any system for sizing. In order to
accomplish this task, get a cloth tape measure
and have access to a full length mirror. Then
take your measurements either when undressed or
in lightweight clothing. Make sure the tape
measure is snug, but not too tight. Stand up
straight and do not slouch. In order to achieve
the most accurate measurements, put your arms at
your side and have a friend take the
measurements.
To measure the bustline, first measure around
the shoulder blades, then under the armpits and
over the fullest part of the bust.
For the waistline, determine your natural
waistline and measure that area.
For the hips, measure around the fullest part of
the hips, which is usually about seven to nine
inches below the waist.
